Burnout — burn-out in Dutch — is one of the most common causes of long-term work incapacity in the Netherlands. Among expats it occurs more often than in the general population, because occupational load is compounded by cultural adaptation, working in a second language, and the absence of a local support network.
At ExpatPsychologie we treat burnout in English and Polish, online and in person in Amersfoort.
What Burnout Actually Is
Burnout is not tiredness and it is not a lack of discipline. It is a state of chronic stress that has crossed the threshold of recovery. The World Health Organization defines it through three dimensions:
Exhaustion — a persistent sense of depletion that does not lift after a weekend or a holiday.
Cynicism and detachment — growing indifference toward work, colleagues, and clients. Things that used to matter stop mattering.
Reduced efficacy — the sense that you are no longer performing as you did. Tasks that were routine now take twice as long.
Symptoms Worth Taking Seriously
- Fatigue that does not resolve with sleep or rest
- Difficulty concentrating and making straightforward decisions
- Irritability, emotional volatility, or emotional numbness
- Physical symptoms: headaches, digestive problems, muscle tension, frequent infections
- Disrupted sleep despite exhaustion
- Sunday dread that starts building on Saturday
- Withdrawal from social contact
- A pervasive sense that none of it means anything
Why Expats Burn Out More Often
Double cognitive load. A full working day in a second language consumes resources that native speakers do not spend. This cost is invisible and nobody compensates for it.
No social shock absorber. At home, after a hard day, there is someone to call, somewhere familiar to go. Abroad that network either does not exist yet or is considerably thinner.
Pressure to justify the decision. You moved, so it has to be worth it. This makes it harder to admit — including to yourself — that things are difficult.
The gratitude trap. "I earn more than I would at home, what am I complaining about?" The sense that you have no right to struggle delays the point at which you seek help, often by years.
How We Treat Burnout
Effective burnout treatment works on two levels simultaneously. This is what distinguishes it from temporary relief.
Level 1 — recovery. Restoring sleep, rebuilding boundaries between work and the rest of life, reducing load where reduction is possible. Without this foundation nothing else holds.
Level 2 — causes. Burnout rarely results from external conditions alone. It is usually co-created by patterns: perfectionism, difficulty declining requests, over-responsibility, the belief that rest has to be earned.
CBT addresses these beliefs directly — identifying them, testing them, and replacing them with something more workable.
ACT works on your relationship to work and on values — helping answer what all of this is for, and how to structure a life in which work does not occupy the entire space.
In practice we most often combine both.
How Long Does Burnout Treatment Take
Typically 12–20 sessions. Early effects — improved sleep, reduced tension — often appear within 4–6 sessions. Durable change to the patterns that produced the burnout takes longer.
The earlier you start, the shorter the process. Burnout ignored for a year takes considerably longer to treat than burnout recognised at three months.
Burnout and the Dutch System
If you are employed and burnout is affecting your capacity to work, the Dutch system provides a pathway through the bedrijfsarts (occupational physician), potentially including sick leave with a structured gradual return (re-integratie). Psychological treatment is a standard component of that process, not a mark against you.
If you work as a ZZP-er (self-employed), you do not have that protection — which is an additional reason not to wait.
Why Work With Us
Before practising as a psychologist I spent over a decade in corporate IT — as an engineer, Scrum Master, and Product Owner. I know the working reality of international teams from the inside: deadline pressure, always-on culture, reorganisations, the standing conflict between quality and velocity.
You will not need to explain what a sprint, an escalation, or a performance review is. That shortens the route to what actually matters.
